Lots to see and do during October

During October there will be a lot of action in the Pleasaunce, starting off with a Bee and Bug Open Day at The Bridge on Sunday 11th October

All families are very welcome to an interesting afternoon from 1pm to 4pm, when there will be a celebration of all things wild and wonderful in the newly improved Green Zone at the Bridge

Free entertainment includes: Forest School Sessions with den making and bug hunts; Bug Hotel and Wormery to watch; Bug and Bee arts and craft; Outdoor Storytelling and a Mud Kitchen.

A great afternoon of free entertainment.

On Sunday 18th October it will be 75 years since a bomb landed on the Pleasaunce and we are running a free event to remember it and celebrate 75 years of Peace in the Pleasaunce, all starting at 2pm.

There will be an interesting talk at 3pm by local Blitz historian Steve Hunnisett about what happened here in Greenwich and the surrounding area during the Blitz. There will be children’s activities around the cafe area and a Wartime Tea (including Spam sandwiches!) at 4pm.

Two or three older residents will be on hand to talk to you about their experiences and Halstow Commnity Choir will provide us with music from the time. You can also find out how Greenwich residents helped in the “Dig for Victory” campaign.

Keep Calm and Come Along!

Then on Saturday 24th October there will be a Trafalgar Day Act of Remembrance which will take place at 12 noon at the memorial plaque, to which all are welcome.

The remains of some of those who died in the battle of Trafalgar, 210 years ago, are buried here in the Pleasaunce so it is an appropriate place to hold this event. The Church of England, East Greenwich Ministry Team will preside over the service.

The Salvation Army band will provide the music and standard bearers from the Royal Naval Association and the Deptford and Greenwich Sea Cadets will parade. Wreaths will be laid by the Mayor of Greenwich and the deputy Lord Lieutenant and representatives from the WRNS. Many from the local Royal Naval Association including residents from the Trafalgar Quarters will attend this event which is supported by our Friends Group.

The Revd. Margaret Cave, our local team rector commented on the event, “We are delighted that the Remembrance Service will continue despite the sad death earlier this year of ex-naval service man Terry Stacey who organised this event for many years.”

Award money for the Eco Garden

There was great excitement at the Bridge last week when they were told that they had won a grant from Awards For All for nearly £8,000 for their Eco Garden.

This will mean that the Forest School will really get going in a big way. A new bee and bug hotel, new plants, a watering systems, composts heap and wormary,  pre-primary suits and clothing, tools for the children and most important of all help in training two forest school leaders. This make a huge difference to the two forest school volunteers who work at the Bridge and also to local school children who will use the new facility.

Well done to all the people who have worked so hard to get this grant, another great success for the Bridge!

More improvements planned for The Bridge

The Bridge (top right hand corner of East Greenwich Pleasaunce) is investigating a one room, one storey extension (where the lorry container currently sits) to offer a wider range of activities to the community, as well as giving The Bridge a much needed facelift!.

A public consultation will be held at the Bridge on Monday 29th June at 8pm. This will give Friends of the Pleasaunce a chance to review the plans in more detail and speak with the architects and directors.

We hope to see you there. More information and the latest drawings are on http://www.thebridgegreenwich.co.uk/future

Summer Festival was a great success

P1000729     P1000708

Sunday the 7th June was the date for this years East Greenwich Pleasaunce Summer Festival. It was a great success as the sun shone all afternoon and the atmosphere was very jolly.  It was again sponsored by Parksfest in partnership with the Royal borough of Greenwich.

The bands: Ronnie and the Ripchords; the Les Zoings, Creekside Brass, Apple of My Eye and the Los Dawsons get the music flowing while the Irish Dancers, Greenwich Morris Men and the Pleasaunce Zumba Dancers kept us entertained.

The Art Tent was packed with drawings, paintings, printing and photographs all provided by local artists.

Children are well catered for at the Bridge Community Centre with a range of things to do all afternoon while down in the dog free zone Messy Church from St John’s and Christ Church kept the older children entertained with a ‘Love Your Neighbour’ theme. Year 6 from Halstow, our local school ran a fete type stall with a bit of parental help to raise money for their year book. A great way to start children off on the road to helping out in the community.

The well stocked Bar with our famous Pleasaunce Punch, had to be replenished several times as the bar staff became the heroes of the day, chopping fruit and pouring Pims as the ice melted.

Good to have a free family day out in the English Summer Sunshine!
